Persistent Real Exchange Rates1

چکیده
Three well known facts that characterize exchange rate data are: (a) the high correlation between bilateral nominal and real exchange rates; (b) the high degree of persistence in real exchange rate movements; and (c) the high volatility of real exchange rates. This paper attempts a joint, albeit partial, rationalization of these facts in an environment with no staggered contracts and where prices are preset for only one quarter. There are two key innovations in the paper. First, we augment a standard two-country open economy model with learning-by-doing in production at the rm level. This induces monopolistically competitive rms to endogeneize the productivity e¤ect of their price setting behavior. Speci cally, rms endogenously choose not to adjust prices by the full proportion of a positive monetary shock in order to take advantage of the productivity bene ts of higher production. Second, we introduce habits in leisure. This makes the labor supply decision dynamic and adds an additional source of propagation. We show that the calibrated model can quantitatively reproduce signi cant fractions of the aforementioned facts. Moreover, as in the data, the model also produces a positive correlation between the terms of trade and the nominal exchange rate.

Can Sticky Price Models Generate Volatile and Persistent Real Exchange Rates?
The central puzzle in international business cycles is that fluctuations in real exchange rates are volatile and persistent. We quantify the popular story for real exchange rate fluctuations: they are generated by monetary shocks interacting with sticky goods prices. If prices are held fixed for at least one year, risk aversion is high, and preferences are separable in leisure, then real exchan...
متن کاملGovernment Purchases and the Real Exchange Rate
Recent empirical research documents that an exogenous rise in government purchases in a given country triggers a persistent depreciation of its real exchange rate— which raises an important puzzle, as standard macro models predict an appreciation of the real exchange rate. This paper presents a simple model with limited international risk sharing that can account for the empirical real exchange...
متن کاملPrice stickiness , inflation , and persistence in real exchange rate fluctuations : cross - country results *
Models that emphasize sticky prices to explain persistent real exchange rate fluctuations predict that such fluctuations should be less persistent in high inflation countries relative to low inflation countries. Cross-country regression results, in general, do not support this implication. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
متن کاملFractal Analysis of Forward Exchange Rates1
In this paper we work with nonparametric methods in modeling and analyzing the financial times series. We use the concept of fractal dimension for measuring the complexity of time series of observed financial data. The aim of this paper is to distinguish between the randomness and determinism of the financial information. We will compare the fractal analysis of the selected forward exchange rat...
متن کاملThe Effect of Exchange Rate Uncertainty on Import with TARCH Approach
This paper investigates the effect of exchange rate uncertainty on the Iran’s import trade. The exchange rate uncertainty series were generated utilizing the TARCH model. This model analyzes the asymmetric effects. The analysis of uncertainty and asymmetry of the exchange rate shows significant TARCH effect on Iran’s exchange rates. The findings of the study indicate negative shocks (bad ne...
